Word nine

A) This is a noun beginning with I. It’s time, energy or money that you put into something, for example, a bank or a company, because you hope to get more money or good things out of it in the future. “Buying a house can be a good …”. “Getting an education is an …in your future”.

Word ten

A) This is a noun or a verb. The noun is something we send to another country to sell there. “These products are for the national market, those are for …”.

The word is an export. An export. To export.

e.g.:

Exports rose last year.

Thailand exports a lot of the rice they produce.

A) So, another word that can be both a noun and a verb. So, we have the verb, to export.

B) Yes.

A) And we’ve got the noun, export.

B) export. Okay, so it means to send goods and services abroad to another country. So, you could say the most famous export from Holland is bulbs, flower bulbs. They export them all over the world.

A) With a noun we could say, oh, she works in export.

B) That’s true. Yeah.

B) Yep. And You often use it with the antonym, the opposite word, import.

A) Yeah.

B) To bring things in from another country. Import and Export. She works in imports and exports.

A) Yeah. I’m trying to think if there’s anything that England or Britain should say actually. Exports.

B) It exports its financial services. It exports football around the world.

A) Yes.

A) I think we do more importing than exporting.

B) Yes. We import electronic goods and everything, mainly from China.

Word eleven

A) This noun begins with A. it means part of a place or the amount of space something takes, for example in meters or it can also mean a subject you study. “The … of the apartment is 60 square meters”. “I don’t know the answer to that question. It’s not my … study”.

The word is area, an area.

e.g.:

It’s a very rich area.

Do you live in this area?

A) So, area, an area.

B) An area could be a geographical region. So, an area of a town might be the part of town where you go to see the theater, the theater area.

A) An area of natural beauty,

B) An area of natural beauty or scientific interest. You might have an area within a subject. So, you might be interested in a particular area of history.

A) Yes, yeah.

B) Or a particular area of the law. So, you might be interested in criminal law or…

A) Yes, which area do you specialize in.

B) Yeah. Yes.

A) I suppose we could talk about sometimes you hear people on the news talk about a dangerous area. When there is a war on.

B) A dangerous area, dangerous zone.

Word twelve

A) This is a noun beginning with D, it means the process of giving things out across an area or across a group of people. Usually in a way that means each person or area gets the same amount. It’s also the word for when companies get their products out to all the different shops. “We help with the … of food to the poor”. “The map shows the population … in the country”.

The word is distribution. Distribution.

e.g.:

The distribution of wealth in the world is not equal.

He works in the distribution center.

A) Distribution. long word.

B) It is a long word and that has a lot of meanings. Distribution is generally about spreading something over an area.

A) Yeah.

B) So, goods need to be distributed.

A) Yes.

B) From a distribution center.

A) Yeah.

B) They go out to the locations where the shops in the various different parts of the country where the goods are sold. To distribute is to give out, so the teacher in your class might distribute papers at the beginning of an exam.

A) Yep.

B) So, it’s passing them around.

A) Maybe if I, if I’m giving something out, you might want to make sure there’s equal distribution.

B) Yes. between everyone. The distribution of wealth people talk about.

A) That’s a very common phrase, isn’t it?

B) The distribution of wealth, often associated with socialism or communism and social welfare… . Sharing the difference of money between everyone.
